Jason O’Hare: Bringing Passion and Play to the Classroom

Teach Michigan Lifestyle TFA

For Jason O’Hare, teaching isn’t just about academics—it’s about connection, curiosity, and creating a space where students feel seen and valued. A second-grade teacher at Blair Elementary, Jason has spent nearly 15 years in early elementary classrooms, fostering a love of learning in his students. Whether he’s refining his instructional practices, starting clubs that build community, or making space for students to bring their full selves to school, Jason’s impact goes far beyond the four walls of his classroom.

After earning his teaching certificate and a master’s degree, he spent time in a variety of educational settings—from Catholic schools to public schools in Colorado Springs—before finding his home at Blair Elementary eight years ago. Almost two decades into his career, his love of teaching has remained steadfast.

“I love being around learning—whether it’s in museums, libraries, or schools. I just want to serve others and help my students build confidence in reading and math.”

In his element—Mr. O’Hare guiding curious minds with patience, energy, and a deep love for learning.

A Lifelong Learner in the Classroom

Jason’s drive to improve his practice is evident in how he approaches teaching. Over the years, he has sought out new strategies to engage his students, one of the most impactful being the introduction of “talk moves” in his classroom—an approach that encourages deeper student dialogue and engagement. Seeing its effectiveness, Jason didn’t just keep the strategy to himself; he led a professional learning session for upper elementary teachers, helping his colleagues integrate it into their own classrooms.

But perhaps Jason’s most powerful moments in teaching aren’t just about instruction—they’re about seeing and supporting the whole child. He recalls a moment when one of his students was having a tough day, curled up under his desk, refusing to move. After exhausting every consequence and incentive he could think of, Jason paused.

“I just looked at him and asked, ‘Do you need a hug?’ And immediately, he ran over for one.” That moment shifted Jason’s mindset on student support. “It reminded me that sometimes, kids don’t need more rules or consequences—they just need to know they’re cared for.”

Bringing Passions to the Playground

Jason’s ability to create connection extends well beyond the classroom. When he noticed students bringing Pokemon cards to school in overwhelming numbers, instead of banning them, he channeled their enthusiasm into something productive—starting a Pokemon club during recess. “It wasn’t just about the cards. It was a way for kids to find community and joy at school.”

But his most popular initiative has been the Blair Elementary Disc Golf Club. A passionate disc golfer himself, Jason started the after-school club in 2023, introducing fourth and fifth graders to the sport.

“Not every kid here goes on to play varsity sports, but disc golf is different—you can play it by yourself or with friends, at any level. I love that it’s something kids can take with them for life.”

Since launching the club, students have eagerly asked, “When is disc golf starting again?”—a testament to the impact it’s had on their school experience. Jason has even spotted students out on local courses, excitedly showing off their discs and newly learned skills.

A Teacher Who Brings His Full Self

At Blair Elementary, Jason is more than just a teacher—he’s a mentor, a role model, and a part of the community. His principal Kirk Ranney describes him as someone whose impact extends far beyond instruction:

“Jason’s passion for teaching and learning has never been more evident. He’s constantly evolving his practice, making strategic adjustments that have led to tremendous student growth. But some of his biggest contributions happen outside the classroom. Whether it’s starting clubs or simply showing up as his full, authentic self, Jason makes connections that matter. We are incredibly lucky to have him as a Blair Bobcat!”

As a TeachMichigan National Board Certified Teacher Fellow, Jason continues to push himself to grow, exchanging ideas with other educators and learning new ways to strengthen his craft. “This profession is a journey. There’s always something new to learn. That’s what keeps me here.”

For Jason O’Hare, teaching isn’t just a job—it’s a way to make the world a better place, one lesson, one game, and one connection at a time.
